WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER
Under the direction of founder Nan Pipestem,
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was established
in 1979. The facility is on five leased acres just
outside of Paicines, California. The facility is
comprised of offices, hospital buildings, survival
and flight training pens, and grounds keeper housing.
The Center is a non-profit organization operated
by volunteers. Its finances are entirely dependent
on community support through donations, membership
contributions, and fund raisers.
For over 15 years the Center has provided information
and education programs to the community and, with the
volunteer assistance of local veterinarians and wildlife
specialists, the Center has rescued, treated, and returned
thousands of wildlife animals to their natural habitat.
The Center is equipped to care for wild birds, including
native birds of prey. The owls, hawks, eagles, and other
raptors are significant contributors to the control of
rodents and ground squirrels, which are especially harmful
to the residential, agricultural, and ranching communities.
These birds of prey are an important factor in the balance
of nature.
In addition to wild birds (see picture below), the Center
cares for and treats native mammals (deer, opossums, bobcats,
skunks, rabbits, hares, foxes, weasels, and racoons), reptiles
and turtles. Some of the animals never recover fully from
their injuries and cannot be released to the wild. However,
the Center's current release rate is over fifty percent. This
is an exceptional recovery and release rate within the wildlife
rehabilitation arena.
The Center holds both state and federal permits and
is accredited and certified by the State of California
and International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council to
rescue, treat, and care for wildlife. The Center has an
ongoing wildlife education program which is available
for presentations to schools, service groups, and other
organizations. An annual Explorama & Open House at
the Center provides the community an opportunity to tour
the Center's hospital grounds and learn directly from
wildlife specialists about the area's wildlife community.

With your help wildlife will have a better opportunity
to survive and co-exist with people. You can help preserve
and protect wildlife for future generations to enjoy. If
you are interested in becoming a volunteer, donating supplies
and/or funds, or are interested in learning more about the
Center, please call or write:
